Employment opportunities for students with social work degrees are increasing

Social work is a profession for those who find fulfillment and reward in making a difference in the everyday lives of individuals. Specifically, social workers help those in need of critical resources including: medical and mental health services, income maintenance, child welfare and protection, domestic violence intervention, and assistance for the elderly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “employment of social workers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2014-2024, faster than the average for all occupations.”

MSU’s bachelor’s of social work will prepare you for entry-level professional practice as a general practitioner immediately upon your graduation. Our students go on to work for state, local, and regional social service agencies, including health, hospice and eldercare, rehabilitation, domestic violence shelters and substance abuse treatment centers.

Physics programs offers diverse options

Morehead State offers students who are interested in physics a number of options.  You can earn a bachelor of science degree with one of the following areas of concentration:

• Computational physics
• Electrical engineering physics
• Mechanical engineering physics
• Applied physics
• Physics teaching
• Professional physics

A bachelor’s degree in physics provides you with a solid background in physics and mathematics. Upon graduation, you can pursue a career as a physicist or further your education in graduate or engineering school. If you choose MSU’s 3-2 program, you can transfer to an accredited engineering school after three years and earn dual degrees in physics and engineering. You can also choose one of MSU’s pre-engineering programs, which allows you to choose from several options to earn degrees in engineering and physics.

Imaging sciences programs put students on career fast track

Morehead State offers a number of imaging sciences degrees to prepare you for a career in health care.

Our Radiologic Science program will put you on the fast track to a career as a radiographer. The associate degree program can be completed in as little as three years. Upon graduation, you will be eligible to apply for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) certification exam.

MSU also offers bachelor’s degrees in Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance (CTMR) and Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). In addition, the online bachelor’s degree in leadership in medical imaging is designed for working professionals who want to assume advanced leadership positions in imaging science.

The programs have selective admission processes, and a limited number of students are accepted each year. Acceptance to Morehead State does not guarantee acceptance into imaging sciences programs.

MSU offers pre-law advising for students in every major

The American Bar Association does not recommend any specific undergraduate majors or group of courses to prepare for a legal education. Students at MSU who hope to attend law school can choose to major in a wide range of programs including history, English, philosophy, political science, economics or business. Legal studies faculty at MSU offer pre-law advising for students in any major to help them make successful applications to law school. 

Our pre-law advising will provide you with information related to law school preparation, the admissions process, notifications concerning campus visits from law schools, opportunities for LSAT preparation and more. If you are already enrolled at MSU, you can access advising information by adding the ‘pre.law’ code to your academic program. PIC Math lets students tackle real-world issues

A new course set to begin in the spring 2016 semester will allow Morehead State mathematics students to tackle real-world issues while giving back to the community.

The course, Preparation for Industrial Careers in Mathematical Sciences, or “PIC Math” is a collaborative effort between MSU’s Department of Mathematics and Physics and local and regional organizations. Students in the class will be presented with an issue or problem being faced by a regional company, organization or governmental entity, and will work in small groups with other students to find solutions.  The course is designed to teach students how to apply mathematical concepts to real-world problem solving, while also teaching them about career possibilities in business, industry and government.

 Students will learn about data mining, graph theory, operations research, geometry, probability and more. They will also have a unique networking opportunity through regular meetings with representatives of the entities that presented the real-world problems for the students.

Public policy degree offers diverse career options

Morehead State’s bachelor’s degree program in public policy will give you the knowledge and skills to prepare you for a wide range of careers. You will learn about  the development and implementation of policy at the local, state, national and international level.

Incorporating classes in the humanities, government, regional issues and more, the public policy program at MSU prepares you for policy-related careers in the public, non-profit and private sectors.

You will be qualified to work as a community development specialist, grants manager, business continuity coordinator and more.  You will also be prepared to enter graduate school or law school.

Submit pieces for publication in Inscape

The Department of Art and Design and the Department of English at MSU continually work to offer you additional opportunities to build your portfolio and provide you with practical hands-on field experiences before you graduate. Giving students the opportunity to publish original pieces in Inscape is just one of many ways the two departments allow students to expand their creative experiences. Inscape is a literary and visual arts magazine produced solely by MSU students.

Students who participate increase their understanding of the art submission and exhibition process and develop professional portfolio pieces. The annual juried publication features a wide range of media and work including:

• Prose
• Poetry
• Short stories
• Long narratives
• Nonfiction
• Creative essays
• Photography
• Printmaking
• Painting
• Design
• Digital art

We are currently looking for writers and artists. The deadline for visual art submissions and the cover design contest is Dec. 4, 2015. Literary work including poetry, prose, fiction and creative nonfiction must be submitted by Jan. 29, 2016.
