Craft Academy to welcome first class next fall

Kentucky high school students who excel in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) classes will have the opportunity next year thanks to an exciting new program from MSU.

The Craft Academy for Excellence in Science and Mathematics allows exceptional high school students to live on the Morehead State campus and earn up to two years of college credit while they complete high school. Students will be able to use the Recreation and Wellness Center, participate in most student organizations and on-campus activities, play on intramural sports teams and more, giving them the complete college experience.

In order to qualify to attend the Craft Academy, students must complete geometry, Algebra I and Algebra II during their first two years of high school. In addition, students interested in the Academy must:

  • Apply for admission before Feb. 1, 2015
  • Be a resident of the state of Kentucky
  • Have a ACT math score of 22 or higher or an SAT math score of 520 or higher.

Admission to the academy includes tuition, boarding and a meal plan (19 meals per week). Students will be responsible for paying for books, additional meals and other miscellaneous expenses. Students will take core classes in STEM fields and electives in the arts and humanities.

Students admitted to the Craft Academy will live in the newly renovated Grote-Thompson Hall, located in the heart of MSU’s beautiful, historic campus, which is ranked as one of the safest college campuses in the state. The hall will be staffed 24 hours a day, giving students of the Academy the full college experience in a safe, structured environment.

The Craft Academy will accept 60 students for the fall of 2015. Check out one of our recruitment events, or request more information.

Submit pieces for publication in Inscape

The Department of Art and Design and the Department of English at MSU continually work to offer you additional opportunities to build your portfolio and provide you with practical and hands-on field experiences before you graduate. Giving students the opportunity to publish original pieces in Inscape is just one of many ways the two departments allow students to expand their creative experiences. Inscape is a literary and visual arts magazine produced solely by MSU students.

Students who participate increase their understanding of the art submission and exhibition process and develop professional portfolio pieces. The annual juried publication features a wide range of media and work including:
  • Prose
  • Poetry
  • Short stories
  • Long narratives
  • Nonfiction
  • Creative essays
  • Photography
  • Printmaking
  • Painting
  • Design
  • Digital art
Students still have time to submit literary pieces for publication before the Jan. 30 deadline.

Start off on the right track with pre-engineering

If you are interested in becoming a professional engineer, it’s important for you to take the right classes to prepare you for pre-professional school, graduate school or a career in engineering.

At Morehead State, students have a number of options to set them on the right track to success. You can begin your pre-engineering studies here at MSU and choose one of three options, which will allow you to transfer your credits at MSU towards an engineering bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. at an accredited institution.

Transfer options include:
  • 2-2 pre-engineering program: This program allows students to obtain a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Students attend MSU for two years and take the required general education, chemistry, math, physics and engineering courses, then transfer to an accredited institution for two years to obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • 3-2 pre-engineering program: This program allows students to earn two bachelor’s degrees. Students attend MSU for three years and take the required general education, chemistry, math, physics and engineering courses, then transfer to an accredited institution for two years to obtain a bachelor's degree in engineering from the transfer institution and a bachelor's degree in physics from MSU.
  • 4-2 engineering program: This program allows students to earn both a bachelor’s and an advanced degree. Students attend MSU for 4 years majoring in an engineering-related field, such as mechanicalelectricalcomputationalapplied or professional physics, then transfer to an accredited post graduate program to obtain a master's degree in engineering.
