Respiratory care program puts students on career fast track

If you are looking for a healthcare related program that will put you on the fast track to a successful, rewarding career, consider the respiratory care program at Morehead State.

MSU offers a two-year associate degree program in respiratory care that will provide you the skills and training to help patients achieve optimum cardiopulmonary health. Through a consortium agreement with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System, MSU offers a program that meets the standards of the Committee on Accreditation in Respiratory Care.  Combining general course requirements in biology, mathematics, communication and writing with core classes in cardiopulmonary pathology, theories of respiratory care and more along with clinical practicums, MSU's program provides a rigorous, well-rounded education that will prepare you for success. Career opportunities in respiratory care include positions in the following settings:

•    Hospitals

•    Extended care facilities

•    Home health agencies

•    Physician's offices

The respiratory care program at MSU has a selective admissions process, and application materials must be submitted by Nov. 15 for eligibility to begin the program in the following spring semester.

Criminology is a growing career field with opportunities at local, state and federal levels

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities in the occupational category of sociologists and criminologists will grow by 15 percent from 2012 through 2022. The criminology program at MSU focuses on understanding the causes of crime and the structure and operations of the criminal justice system, preparing students for a wide range of careers.

Students must complete 48 hours of sociology and criminology courses including the senior capstone, an internship and internship seminar. Recently our students have completed internships with the following organizations:

Equestrian camps offer much more horsin' around

Morehead State’s Department of Agricultural Sciences will offer a number of horseback riding camps this summer. The camps are open to children ages 5-18, and full-day and half-day camps are offered. All camps are supervised by MSU Equestrian Team coach Erin LeCompt and two student assistants. Camps will be held for riders at all skill levels and will be held at the Derickson Agricultural Complex on Route 377 (Cranston Road).

Half-day camps are held for beginning riders, and the cost is $200. Camps are scheduled as follows:

·      Beginner I camps are designed for children with little to no experience with horses and horseback riding. Campers will learn basic grooming skills, leading skills, and basic riding skills. Half-day camps will be held June 15-19 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. and July 13-17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

·      Beginner II camp is for children who have successfully completed beginner I camp, and campers will continue learning more difficult riding skills. Beginner II half-day camps will be held June 15-19 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and July 13-17 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Full-day camps are designed for more experienced riders, and campers will learn much more about how to care for horses, as well as advanced riding skills. Cost is $300. Full-day camps are scheduled as follows:

·      Beginner II/Intermediate camp is designed for campers who are comfortable at a walk, trot, posting the trot and the two-point position. The camps will be held June 22-26 and July 13-17 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

·      Advanced/Intermediate camp is for advanced riders who have successfully completed Beginner I and Beginner II camps. Campers in the advanced/intermediate camp should be comfortable and have correct position at the trot and canter paces. Campers in these camps will take a field trip to the Masterson Station Equine Park in Lexington. The Advanced/Intermediate camp will be held July 6-10 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

MSU's dance minor helps students develop imaginative, critical and technical skills

The dance minor at MSU is designed for both technical and non-technical dancers and provides strong groundwork in dance technique, history, composition and performance. Students learn a wide array of popular dance forms including modern, tap, jazz, ballet, improvisation, African, hip-hop and more.

The program provides a foundation for the following careers:

• Administrative professional for dance companies
• Artistic director
• Choreographer
• Critic
• Educator
• Professional dancer
• Rehearsal director

Students in the dance program will gain hands-on experience through participation in dance ensembles and choreography sessions offered each semester. Through MSU's Artist-in-Residency program, instructors from professional dance companies are brought to the university to conduct interactive workshops.

Leadership in medical imaging degree prepares professionals for career advancement

Morehead State’s Leadership in medical imaging bachelor’s degree is designed to help medical imaging technologists, radiation therapists and sonographers take their careers to the next level.

The degree is offered online to registered practitioners in therapeutic and imaging sciences. Students enrolled in the program can work full time as they complete their degree on their own schedule. Coursework for the degree includes classes in writing, speech, social and behavioral sciences, computer literacy and more. The diverse course requirements for the Leadership in medical imaging degree ensure students will receive a well-rounded, robust education that will equip them with the diverse skill set they’ll need to fill leadership positions.

Students will learn communication, management, critical thinking and teaching skills that will help them assume leadership positions in imaging sciences, including administrative, management and educational roles.

Interdisciplinary International studies major prepares students for a variety of professions

The interdisciplinary international studies program at MSU serves students who would like to achieve a deeper understanding of other nations and cultures, languages and how historical and cultural backgrounds shape current events. 

Students will develop interdisciplinary analytical skills and assess current political and economic changes. The program combines classroom learning with practical application of international concepts and students complete a required study abroad experience approved by the department.

The program includes tracks of study specializing in the Eurasian region, Latin American region, European region and Africa and the Middle Eastern region.

Professions relying on a background in international studies include those in:

• Social work

Completing an interdisciplinary international studies major also prepares students for entrance into graduate school.

Camp SMILE helps children, teaches students about outreach

A unique summer camp for children who have lost a loved one will give MSU nursing students an opportunity to perform an important community service.

Camp SMILE (Sharing Memories in a Loving Environment) will be held at Camp Judy Layne May 29-31. 

The camp is open to children, 7 to 17 years old, who have recently suffered the loss of a loved one. They will participate in activities such as swimming, archery, hiking and crafts, and bereavement counselors will guide them through understanding their feelings of grief and loss. The camp is offered free of charge, but there is an application process.

Students from MSU’s Department of Nursing will be involved in a service learning opportunity at the camp. In order to participate, students are required to take a specialized class in camp nursing to prepare to serve at the camp. This is the eighth year students will be involved in the camp, which is a collaborative effort between the Department of Nursing and St. Claire Regional Hospice and Palliative Care.
