MSU jazz studies graduates are well-rounded musically and academically

The jazz studies track within the Bachelor of Music at MSU is designed for students interested in learning how to perform, compose, arrange and teach jazz music at a professional level. The program provides students with the tools needed to build a successful career in jazz and commercial music. Students in the program may choose their major instrument including guitar, piano and saxophone.

Career options include:

  • Educator/teacher
  • Composer/songwriter
  • Conductor/band leader
  • Music arranger/orchestrator
  • Music copyist, publisher and editor
  • Non-profit administrator

Students in jazz studies gain hands-on experience and have opportunities to perform in both large and small jazz ensembles to hone their improvisational and sight-reading skills. In addition to jazz coursework, students receive a foundation in classical music through courses such as music theory, music history and basic conducting.
