Traditional music program provides students with extensive performance experience

Creative cultural interaction in Appalachia has produced many distinctive styles of music. In the Bachelor of Arts in Traditional Music program at MSU you will study bluegrass, old time, country, ballad singing, blues, Celtic, western swing and more. You will receive hands-on experience in the form of performances, as well as opportunities to interact with musical artists and professionals in the industry. You will also study traditional music forms and its culture from both a historical and contemporary perspective.
MSU is home to the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music (KCTM). As a student you will have access to KCTM’s large collection of music archives and will participate in outreach events with experienced faculty members.
Our graduates are prepared to pursue careers as performers (soloists in small and large ensembles) and music industry specialists (retail, publishing, technology and management). A bachelor's in traditional music will also prepare you for advanced graduate school study.
A minor in traditional music is also available. To learn more about MSU's traditional music program, visit www.moreheadstate.edu/kctm.
