Employment opportunities for students interested in learning a second language are on the rise

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "employment of interpreters and translators is projected to grow 29 percent from 2014-2024, much faster than the average for all occupations.” MSU offers degrees in Spanish and Spanish with teacher certification (P-12). For students interested in the language and culture, a background in Spanish may provide career opportunities in industries where knowledge of a second language is beneficial, including business and commerce, translating and interpreting, government work, teaching, tourism, social services and more.

Spanish is spoken in more than 20 countries around the world, and has become the second language of the United States. MSU’s programs provide rigorous training, supplemented by several exciting overseas study opportunities. You may have the opportunity to participate in research being conducted on classroom language acquisition as well as opportunities to engage in culture and language through Hispanic culture, history, literature and film both on campus and in the community.

You may also participate in activities and opportunities that provide real-world, hands-on experience, including:

  • Tutoring in local schools
  • Service learning courses or activities using Spanish
  • Translation projects in a variety of for-profit and non-profit settings
  • Internships using knowledge of a second language
