Criminology is a growing career field with opportunities at local, state and federal levels

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities in the occupational category of sociologists and criminologists will grow by 15 percent from 2012 through 2022. The criminology program at MSU focuses on understanding the causes of crime and the structure and operations of the criminal justice system, preparing students for a wide range of careers.

Graduates may pursue work in the following:

  • Community treatment centers
  • Corrections
  • Court administration
  • Federal criminal justice administration
  • Homeland security
  • Juvenile justice
  • Law
  • Law enforcement
  • Public defender's offices
  • Substance abuse counseling
Students must complete 48 hours of sociology and criminology courses including the senior capstone, an internship and internship seminar. Recently our students have completed internships with the following organizations:
  • DOVES (Domestic Violence Women's Shelter)
  • Kentucky Division of Probation and Parole
  • Kentucky State Police
  • Morehead Inspiration Center
  • Rowan County Drug Court
